About SALSA Conferences

The Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America organizes a conference sesquiannually, that is, every one and a half years. SALSA conferences are among the world's foremost venues for presenting original research on lowland South America. SALSA strives to provide an environment conducive to extensive discussion and exchange of ideas among scholars attending its conferences. Our conferences are among the best sites for exchange of information among specialists in lowland South American studies.

SALSA has held six conferences since 2002. At these conferences scholars have presented nearly two hundred papers totalling over 95 hours, including extended discussions. SALSA conferences have also hosted poster papers, film showings, workshops, discussion forums, publication exchanges, museum receptions, and other events. Keynote speakers have included John Hemming, Eduardo Viveiros de Castro, Ellen Basso, Stephen Hugh-Jones, Joanna Overing, and Clark Erickson.

The Sixth Sesquiannual Conference of SALSA was held at the Hotel Contessa in San Antonio, TX, 14-17 January 2010. The conference program has been posted. Photos and abstracts will be posted soon; please check back for new announcements.
