ASSOCIATIONS AND ORGANIZATIONS

Associação Brasileira de Antropología
The website of the Brazilian Anthropology Association contains information about the ABA, its conferences and other organized events, links, photographs, a list of books, videos, and CDs published by the ABA, and content of interest to Braziliana and Brazilianist anthropologists.

Brazilian Studies Association
The Brazilian Studies Association, or BRASA, describes itself as "an international, interdisciplinary group of scholars who support and promote Brazilian studies in all fields, especially in the humanities and social sciences." BRASA organizes a biennial conference, with the next conference to be held in New Orleans in 2008.

Instituto Socioambiental
Instituto Socioambiental, or ISA, is a Brazilian NGO that defends social, cultural, and environmental rights of Brazilian peoples. This website is a rich source of information not only on their current projects, but on issues related to indigenous peoples, environmental protection, and other issues of interest to ISA. ISA also publishes books that are sold through their website.

Cultural Survival
Cultural Survival is a U.S.-based NGO dedicated to protecting the human rights of indigenous peoples and ethnic minorities around the world. Their website includes a comprehensive list of indigenous organizations, with links, as well as current information and links to documents and resources related to their insititutional mission.

 

RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS, PROGRAMS, AND PROJECTS

Museu do Índio, Brazil
A major research institution focused on indigenous peoples of Brazil. The website includes information on the museum's events and exhibits, its research projects, its library, and current events related to indigenous peoples of Brazil.

Museu Nacional, UFRJ
Associated with the Universidade Federal de Rio de Janeiro, the Museu Nacional is both a research and a teaching institution, with a large anthropology collection, as well as a graduate program in social anthropology. The website contains links to the graduate program, exhibits, the library, and the museum's ongoing research projects and publications.

Núcleo Transformações Indígenas
NUTI is a resarch project associated with the UFRJ anthropology department, bringing together anthropologists from various institutions, to study processes of transformation in indigenous Brazilian communities. The website includes information on NUTI's projects, publications, and events, as well as a links page and several documents of interest to students of indigenous South America.

An exceptional site containing information on each of the ethnographic areas of South America, with descriptive texts, maps, lists of ethnic groups with populations, bibliographic references, and lists of relevant websites.

Diccionario Etnolingüístico y Guía Bibliográfica de los Pueblos Indígenas Sudamericanos
An amazing website. Aspires to be a comprehensive bibliography of the anthropology of South America. Organized by language family. A great resource for scholars interested in lowland South America.

Panoan Bibliography
Aspires to be a complete bibliography of sources relating to the Panoan language family. Contains more than 2000 entries.

Sustainable Amazonia Bibliography
A bibliography of articles, books, and reports concerning sustainable development and conservation in Amazonia. Many articles are available in pdf form.

Scientific Electronic Library Online
A portal for a wide variety of international scientific journals, presented in full-text form and free of charge. Focuses on Latin American journals. Of interest to SALSA members will be Brazilian journals Horizontes Antropológicos; Mana-Estudos de Antropologia; and Revista de Antropologia Social; and two Chilean journals, Chungará-Revista de Antropología Chilena, and Universum-Revista de Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales. Also present is the Brazilian journal Acta Amazonica, which focuses on biological sciences but includes many articles of interest to anthropologists.

Bibliothèque Sharanahua
A website operated by Sharanahua specialist Pierre Déléage, containing a link to his thesis, essays, translations of Sharanahua and Yaminahua songs, audio files, and links to further information. The site is mostly in French but also includes materials in English and links to materials in Portuguese.

Série Antropologia--Universidade de Brasília
The series of anthropology publications of the Universidade de Brasília. Over 300 articles and monographs available in pdf form. By following the links at the top, one may also access four doctoral and twenty master's theses.

Projeto Amazone
A wiki site focused on the conceptual imagination of indigenous Amazonian cultures, containing contributions of great interest by anthropologists specializing in this theme, including Eduardo Viveiros de Castro.

Julio Cezar Melatti's website
Includes a course on indigenous mythology, several books on the Kraho, book reviews, and articles.

Brazilian Indian Languages
This website contains vocabularies and dictionaries for numerous indigenous Brazilian languages, as well as several important articles and texts on the linguistic anthropology of indigenous Brazilians. There are also links to sites concerning the classification of indigenous South American languages and several links to bibliographies of indigenous Brazilian language and culture.

Journal de la Société des Américanistes
One of the top journals on the anthropology of the Americas, publishing numerous articles and book reviews on lowland South America. The website covers the past five years. The 2001 issues are online in full-text form. For 2002 to 2005, the site provides access only to the abstracts of articles, but gives full-text access to book reviews, research reports, obituaries, and the reports of their "information group on Amerinidians." A very useful website for keeping track of current research on lowland South America.

Lowland South Americanist European Network
This web page contains information about LOSAN, the Lowland South Americanist European Network, an interdisciplinary network for European-based colleagues working in Lowland South America. As a free listserv, it provides relevant information, via its members, about talks, announcements, events, workshops and conferences taking place within Europe.

ARCHAEOLOGY

Marajó Island Archaeology and Precolonial History
A website containing information on the archaeological Marajoara culture. Includes the possibility of downloading several articles and a Master's thesis.

Applied Archaeology in the Bolivian Amazon
Includes essays, photographs, artist's reconstructions, bibliographies, links, and other useful information concerning archaeological research in the Bolivian lowlands. A well-designed, highly informative site. Many articles are made available in pdf form.
