Indigenous brokers at the margins of the state: entanglements of hierarchies and intimacies in the Colombian Amazon

This project focuses on present-day indigenous brokerage in the Putumayo region of the Colombian Amazon, aiming to explore everyday lives of indigenous women and men who mediate the relationships between their communities, state agencies, and NGOs, thus frequently being both subjects and agents of social interventions. Both academic views and top-down state and NGOs narratives tend to assume relatively clear boundaries between the ‘doers’ and the ‘done to’ of interventions in the Colombian Amazon, representing indigenous people as recipients or stressing how they cope with programmes of intervention.
