Fourteenth SALSA Biennial Conference – Amazon Triple Frontier Brazil-Colombia-Peru, 27-30 July 2023

Roxani Rivas is Assistant Professor at the Escuela de Antropología social of the Universidad Nacional de la Amazonía Peruana (UNAP) in Iquitos (Peruvian Amazon). She holds a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology and Ethnology of the Ecole des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS, France). She has worked on intercultural education with several Amazonian peoples, particularly with the Kukama-Kukamiria, in the Programa de Formación de Maestros Bilingües, Formabiap (FORMABIAP) of the Asociación Interétnica de Desarrollo de la Selva Peruana (AIDESEP).

Roxani is interested and has written about the relationship between human beings and the environment, especially adaptation to aquatic spaces, mainly among the Kukama-Kukamiria of the Peruvian Amazon. Her book project ´La Serpiente, madre del agua´ explores the social relationships of the Kukama-Kukamiria with their aquatic environment, being an archetype of the peoples living in the várzea ecosystems of the Amazon Basin, which connects with the central religious institution of aquatic shamanism as a total social fact. Her research topics focus on social and environmental aspects of development in indigenous peoples of the Loreto Region. Currently, this theme has been enlarged to the environmental urban development of the city of Iquitos.
