SALSA XII Sesquiannual Conference 2019

The Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America (SALSA) is pleased to announce that its XII Sesquiannual Conference will take place at Weltmuseum, in Vienna, Austria, from the 27th to the 30th of June, 2019.

Preparing the conference are Claudia Augustat (Conference Organizer and host) and Juan Alvaro Echeverri (Academic Program Chair), in close collaboration with Carlos D. Londoño Sulkin (SALSA President), Laura Zanotti (SALSA Secretary-Treasurer), Jeremy Campbell (SALSA President-Elect) and Glenn Shepard (Webmaster). The Academic Program Chair will coordinate the academic program and the review process of all proposals for papers, thematic panels, workshops, films and posters.

We invite proposals in the following categories:

  1. Individual Papers, either as part of an accepted Thematic Panel or independent.
  2. Films volunteered to be screened during the conference.
  3. Posters, open to non-member students.

Proposals submission deadline: January 31, 2019.
Notification of acceptance: February 28, 2019.

Abstracts and papers may be submitted and presented in English, Portuguese or Spanish. Proposal submissions are open to current as well as new SALSA members. Posters are open to other students and to professional members. For all categories, except Posters, presenters must be SALSA members and must have earned a Ph.D. or be an advanced student in a Ph.D. program.

Paper presentations in panels must be no longer than 20 minutes in length. Normally, there shall be a limit of one paper and one other official role per person.

Instructions for submission

    1. Individual papers

Submission of paper abstracts, either attached to a Thematic Panel or Workshop, or presented independently, should be sent to the Academic Program Chair (salsaconference2019@gmail.com) by January 31, 2019, using the SALSA 2019 Individual Paper/Poster/Film Proposal Form.
Papers attached to an accepted Thematic Panel or Workshop should indicate the title and organizers of the panel or workshop in the space provided.  Please also send your title and abstract to the organizer of your workshop or panel.
The Program Chair will organize accepted independent papers (i.e. not attached to a panel or workshop) into thematic panels, or assign them to an appropriate organized panel that has an opening.

    1. Films

Members volunteering a film to be screened during the conference should fill in the SALSA 2019 SALSA 2019 Individual Paper/Poster/Film Proposal Form and send it via e-mail to the Academic Program Chair (salsaconference2019@gmail.com) by January 31, 2019
In the abstract section of the form, include a brief statement explaining the film’s theme, length in minutes, and format.

    1. Posters 

Open to non-member students and professional members.
Students at all levels may present a poster. SALSA membership is not required, but poster presenters must register and pay the student registration fee. To submit a poster proposal, fill in the SALSA 2019 SALSA 2019 Individual Paper/Poster/Film Proposal Form and send it via e-mail to the Academic Program Chair (salsaconference2019@gmail.com) by January 31, 2019.

Expedited Review Option: For international members and others who require earlier notification about acceptance of their proposals (for example, to apply for travel funds through your home institution), we offer an expedited review. Check the relevant box on the form when you submit the proposal. You will receive notification within ten days, accompanied (if accepted) by an official letter of invitation.

SALSA Membership: Membership in SALSA must be up to date to submit a proposal. PhD students presenting papers must be SALSA members. Membership is not required for students presenting posters, but they must pay the conference registration for students (see below).  Individuals can join SALSA or renew their membership via the SALSA Club Express weblink. Membership rates (in US$) are: North America/Europe Professional Member: $60;  Latin America/Asia/Africa Professional Member: $35;  Student Member: $35. Further information on SALSA membership, selecting the link.

Conference registration: Conference registration must be paid by March 31, 2019 to be included in the program, and can be paid later by those not presenting papers. Individuals can register via the SALSA Club Express page. Registration fees (in US$) are: North America & Europe-based Professional Members: $195; Latin America, Asia, and Africa-based Professional Members: $130; Un/underemployed Members (regardless of geography): $100; Student members (regardless of geography): $80; Non-participant registration fee (guests, spouses): $80.
