SUSANA DE MATOS VIEGAS is an anthropologist, Research Fellow at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon. She completed her PhD in 2003 in the University of Coimbra where she was a Junior Lecture since 1989. She is member of the Scientific Committee of National Geographic- Portugal since 2001, and of the Journal Educação em Foco (UEMG/Brasil) since 2013. She is a member of the External Editorial Board of the Journal Maloca – Revista de Estudos Indígenas do Centro de Pesquisa em Etnologia Indígena (CPEI-Unicamp/Brasil) since 2018. She is currently a member of the Scientific Committee of the 2020 Conference of the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA) and a leading member, together with Miguel Vale de Almeida, of the Local Committee of the same conference – to be hosted by ICS/ISCTE in Lisbon in 2020. She was President of the Association of Portuguese Anthropology (2006-2009) and a member of the Directory Board of the International Association of Social Sciences and Humanities in Portuguese (AILPcsh) – 2012-2015. She conducted fieldwork in Brazil and Timor-Leste acting as Principal Investigator with research grants from the National Ministry of Science (Portugal), Brazilian Ministry of Science (PRONEX), and Ministry of Justice (FUNAI).  She is currently a member of the research project PROPRIETAS – Social History of Property and Rights, Cnpq, Brasil.

From 1996 to 2009 she developed research in the study of Amerindian Peoples of Lowland South America, in particular, the mixed-blood Tupi Amerindians (caboclos) of southern Bahia. Her main topics included personhood, kinship and place, land ownership, and ‘indigenous transformations’. Starting from 2003, she was the Principal Investigator of an interdisciplinary research team and consultant for FUNAI in the process of recognition by the Brazilian Federal State of the Territory of the Tupinambá of Olivença, being asked by the Tupinambá themselves to act as coordinator and author of the respective Anthropological Report. Since 2012 she carries out fieldwork among the Fataluku in Timor-Leste, opening up a new research interest on Oceania and Southeast Asia, on topics of land and place, kinship, death, historicities of belonging and Ancestorship.
