Steven Lee Rubenstein Memorial Scholarship 2023

For every SALSA conference since 2016, a travel stipend has been awarded to a graduate student, recent PhD, or precariously employed member who wishes to present their work at the SALSA sesquiannual meetings. This award supports emerging research related to the study of Lowland South American anthropology which furthers Rubenstein’s research agenda into contrasting systems of power, gender, shamanism, racism and/or education. Financial support for this opportunity has been graciously furnished by the Rubenstein family, in memory of Steve…a dynamic and generous colleague who we lost too soon.
The SALSA Board is happy to announce that this year will provide additional support for this year’s winners, who will each receive $1,000 to defray costs associated with travel to Leticia for SALSA’s 2023 Conference. One of them is William Boose, who will present this paper at the XIV Conference of SALSA in Leticia:
La movilidad cotidiana en las ciudades amazónicas: Los mototaxis de Iquitos y Leticia
Los mototaxis son omnipresentes en toda la Amazonía y los mototaxistas son productores fundamentales de la movilidad cotidiana en la región. Fue también en las ciudades amazónicas—primero en Iquitos, Perú en 1978—donde los mototaxis comenzaron su difusión por América Latina. En este ensayo analizo los roles económicos y sociales de los mototaxistas en dos ciudades amazónicas: Iquitos y Leticia, Colombia. También trato las percepciones sociales sobre los mototaxistas en ambas ciudades, buscando complicar las formas en que suelen ser categorizados e incluso estigmatizados. En el caso de Iquitos, me baso en investigaciones de campo, entrevistas, observaciones y análisis de medios que he realizado desde 2018. En el caso de Leticia, me baso en análisis de medios y entrevistas virtuales, y espero complementar estos métodos entrevistando a mototaxistas en la ciudad justo antes del inicio de la conferencia. Finalmente, comparo los dos contextos.
